Friday Afternoon in Havana
This book begins with that image and expands, fragmenting a single frame into many. Each crop isolates a moment, revealing stories embedded in the everyday. Through the sport, we glimpse deeper shifts. Baseball, once a symbol of Cuba’s historic ties with the U.S., has given away to soccer, ‘the beautiful sport,’ that connects Havana to the wider world.
The children wear jerseys of global icons. Argentinian Lionel Messi becomes a vessel of dreams - much like Che Guevara once was for another generation. In this space, global influence and local resilience meet.
From one photograph, this book uncovers many perspectives. Each vignette tells part of a larger story - a view into how Cuba continues to adapt, redefine itself, and stay connected to the world beyond its shores.
