Reimagining
Summary
Social living conditions for youth migrants in Johannesburg, South Africa, are often characterized by significant challenges. These young people frequently find themselves in precarious situations, struggling to access basic necessities and integrate into society.
ONGOING PROJECT....
Some youth migrants in Johannesburg find themselves in a shed of overcrowded and informal housing. They often reside in densely populated areas, informal settlements, or dilapidated buildings, which lack proper sanitation, water, and electricity, leading to poor health outcomes and safety concerns. High-rise buildings have been transformed to occupy more people, often leading to overcrowding and strain on existing infrastructure. The change in building structures often involves the balcony transforming a bedroom deterioration of existing buildings.
Limited access to education and employment, languages barriers, lack of documentation, and discrimination hinder their access to schools and formal employment opportunities, trapping them in a cycle of poverty and vulnerability.
Due to their vulnerable status, many are susceptible to exploitation, including forced labor, human trafficking, and other forms of abuse.
