Empty storefronts are lining Main Street in downtown Claremont, New Hampshire, an old mill town. It is a downward spiral that many of the state’s cities and towns have witnessed over the years. Much of the decline started when the mills moved south in the ’60s and ’70s for cheaper recourses. Recessions later played a part. As did the arrival of malls and online shopping.
