The parade is a celebration of Mexican Independence Day, which is celebrated each year on September 16th. The parade was headed by the Charros, Mexican horsemen who wore traditional Mexican costumes. Despite many neighborhoods and suburbs holding their own Mexican Independence Day celebration, the Little Village Parade is still the largest in the Midwest.
The war of independence, sometimes referred to as the Mexican Revolutionary Civil War, took place from September 16, 1810 to September 27, 1821. It was an armed conflict and political process that resulted in Mexico’s independence from Spain and the Spanish Empire.
