LEIPZIG, GERMANY - FEBRUARY 27: Book Artist and practitioner Anne Deuter in her studio in Leipzig, Saxony, Germany on February 27, 2023. Leipzig Germany. Part of my ongoing series of Portraiture on Artists in Mitteldeutschland.
Anne Deuter is a book designer with a bachelor's degree in art history and fine arts from Greifswald. She studied book arts at Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule Halle. Since 2015, she has been a self-employed working book artist, book art mediator and draughtswoman.
Together with fellow artists Marianne Nagel and Silas Schmidt von Wymeringhausen she opened a space for book art and drawing, Objects of Desire, in West Leipzig in January 2018. Under the name Eselohr. She works as a freelance book art educator in a team with Marianne Nagel at schools, socio-cultural institutions and the OdB.
In Anne’s own words:
'Book art gives me the opportunity to explore what unsettles / irritates me.
Touch is part of the starting point of my artistic work. Something has to touch me, emotionally and spiritually, to get started. This touch can be contradictory - it can be pleasant, it can also hurt. I often start the creative process with restrictions. This gives me a structure within which to move. It is a delicate balance between order and chaos, intention and intuition. Each step in the process is part of the sequence of works, from drawing to model making to the finished artist's book. After thinking visually with the pencil, I change the material and this change changes the idea. There is a kind of building tension from which what I want to say grows. Once an artist's book is physically complete, the touching continues - in the haptic experience and in letting oneself be touched.'
