Couple of thousand people protested in London against the government’s police, crime, sentencing and courts bill which, if passed, would significantly increase police's power to prevent, control and punish people protesting in future. It not only enables police to curb protests that are a serious annoyance to public, e.g. by noise, but also increases the possible jail time for participation in protest to the lengths currently used for serious crimes including rape. Additionally, it, in effect, criminalizes the lives of gypsy and traveller communities in Britain. The protest was peaceful for most of the day but later in the evening fights broke out between the police and some protesters ending with dozens of arrests. Similar protests took place across the UK including Bristol, where riots broke out through the night.
