Since September 18, 2025, Ecuador has faced an indefinite national strike called by the CONAIE (Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador) and various social movements, following the issuance of Executive Decree 126 by President Daniel Noboa, which eliminated the diesel subsidy According to the FMI requirements. The measure increased the price per gallon from $1.80 to $2.80, generating strong opposition from the transportation, agricultural, and rural community sectors.The demonstrations have spread across several provinces, with road blockades, marches, and rallies in cities such as Quito, Cotopaxi, Imbabura, and Pastaza. In response, the government declared a state of emergency in six provinces and deployed security forces to contain the protests. Protesters are demanding a review of the decree, along with economic policies to reduce the impact of rising prices, greater investment in health and education, and respect for Indigenous territories in the face of expanding mining and oil activities.To date, the demonstrations have left three persons dead, dozens detained, and multiple injured, according to human rights organizations. The strike continues without agreements between the government and Indigenous leaders, causing disruptions to production, transportation, and the supply of goods in several regions of the country.
