Summary
On September 19, 1985, Mexico City experienced a magnitude 8.1 earthquake lasting 90 seconds. Thirty-two years later, on the same day, and following memorials and drills, the ground shook again in some areas for more than 90 seconds. The two incidents caused severe damage in various areas of the city, while citizens demonstrated greater initiative than the authorities in carrying out rescue and relief efforts.
In the midst of the national holiday celebrations, 32 years later, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck, its epicenter between the states of Morelos and Puebla, near Mexico City. Lasting 90 seconds, the earthquake caused damage in various areas of Mexico City, as well as in neighboring municipalities.
