Twelve of my photographs of my on-going series Simple Moments of an Emerging Presence, documenting the Staten Island Mexican-American and Mexican-immigrant communities, is featured in the Photoville Festival on its 10th anniversary year. The exhibition is curated by Victoria Munro and Paul Moakley of Alice Austen House. September 15 - December 31, 2021, open 24/7. At Ocean Breeze Fishing Pier South Beach Promenade, 656 Father Capodanno Blvd. & Seaview Avenue. Staten Island, NY 10305. Admission: FREE and open to the public.
A vibrant cultural center, the Alice Austen House keeps the bold spirit of the early American photographer alive by presenting changing exhibitions of Austen’s pioneering historic photographs, as well as contemporary photography, providing education programs for students, and offering a range of cultural programs for the public. A Victorian gothic cottage that was Austen’s home serves as the museum and is located in a nationally LGBTQ+ landmarked park on the shore of Staten Island—near the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge with sweeping views of Brooklyn and lower Manhattan.
Photoville is a New York-based non-profit organization that works to promote a wider understanding and increased access to the art of photography and visual storytelling by producing a free annual festival, amplifying impactful narratives, and connecting artists to a wide global audience by activating accessible public spaces via large scale exhibitions.
