New York City Día de Muertos or Day of the Dead Festival

Staten Island, NY – On October 20, 2019, Irma Bohórquez-Geisler will present Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) in Staten Island, one of Mexico’s most important and colorful holidays, a celebration of Mexican heritage and culture. Dr. Bohórquez-Geisler will be commemorating her 27th anniversary as Founder, Executive Artistic and Program Director.

The Day of the Dead is an annual festival that honors the lives and memory of loved ones who have died. It emphasizes the joy of our past relations rather than the grief at our loss and does not treat death as scary or haunting.

Enjoy this fun-filled and educational day suitable for the entire family. The event is free to the public and will begin at 9:30 am with the building of the community ofrenda or altar. Participants are invited to bring photos of deceased loved ones, relatives’ favorite food, drink, and flowers to the community altar. Also, enjoy participatory traditional paper-art workshops led by teaching-artist Tamara Geisler, Irma Bohórquez-Geisler and Silvia Gutierrez, live Mariachi Corazon de Mexico band, Cempoalxóchitl: the flower with 20 petals presented by Claudia Valentina, Son Jarocho, pirekuas, canto cardenche and rancheras music. Dances performances include, Comparsa de Chinelos of Staten Island, Nuu Davi and MazArte.

This event is made possible in part by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and Con Edison; by a DCA Art Fund Grant to Irma Bohórquez-Geisler from Staten Island Arts, with public funding from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, and The Lois & Richard Nicotra Foundation.
