Over There in the Monts d'Arrée
In 2015, at the height of the "migrant crisis," citizens from the Monts d'Arrée in Finistère decided to support the migrants around Calais. Quickly, driven by some activists, the association Les Utopistes en action was created with the goal of helping exiled people, particularly unaccompanied minors, present in the area. The alternative school, a volunteer-run educational structure, was established in 2018 in the commune of Cloître-Saint-Thégonnec. This was followed by a welcoming house, a place for housing the young students of the school. Today, and since 2021, the school has moved to the commune of Pleyber-Christ with the support of the mayor and the municipal council. The house hosts around fifteen young people, and the school welcomes between fifteen and twenty students every day. Many of those who have passed through the school now live and work in the region. A strong bond has developed over the years between the school, the volunteers, and the young people welcomed.
